80 The Thick Paint project

IN THE PAST YEAR digital publishing has evolved considerably. A digital book about thick paint could be extremely interesting. Imagine these blog entries placed in logical order, with new chapters and videos bridging the gaps, and published as a digital book. A book made with iBook Author would have text, video, and high resolution images that could be enlarged to see extreme close-ups of the textures of each painting. It is an ideal format for painting instruction and I am very enthused to complete such a project.

I'm considering Apple's iBook Author for its low creation costs and universal availablility via iTunes.

I really appreciate all the encouragement and kind words I've received since the inception of this blog. I couldn't do it without your support. Thanks so much.

  1. Brad, I have heard (but not read) that the fine print in iBook Author's user agreement limits how and where you can sell your iBook. Make sure you dredge through the fine print before you go building something that could potentially be frustratingly limited. As I said, I have not read any of this personally, but have heard and read some buzz to that effect. That said, I think an ibook of this sort would be intriguing. Good luck!

    1. Thanks for the heads up Greg! I will definitely look into any complications that might arise. I was assuming that Apple would be somewhat creator friendly but that obviously is not entirely true.

If anyone has any insights please leave comments. While I believe it is important to share innovation its important not to lose control of one's work.

  2. Greg,

I did finally find out what the deal was with Apple and their IBooks: they only have claim on the way you made your book, not the content. In other words you can't sell an iBook made with their software via Amazon.com. That's a little weird. Imagine if Adobe Photoshop made a claim on any creative project made with their software.

But for the time being I think I can live with it. I am sure things will change as the iBook market gets more competitive.
