145: Vacuum sealed bottles

I'm pleased to report that the experiment to vacuum seal Gamblin mediums proved successful. At least partially so. I used the Vacu Vin Wine Saver to easily seal the 16 ounce Gamblin bottle and it worked perfectly. However the stopper is too small for the 32 ounce bottle and too big for the 8 ounce bottle. So I'm still using rubber stoppers for those sizes.

This model of vacuum stopper makes a small click when a vacuum is achieved and I was surprised how much pumping I did to extract the air. But once you know how long it takes (just a few seconds, really) it's a snap to seal. I recommend getting the model with the extra stoppers (see link below).

Thanks to fellow painters Dave Casey and Robert P. Britton, Jr. for this terrific idea! I'm sure it will save hundreds of dollars of medium over the years.

  1. That has to really contribute towards saving medium, Brad. With a vacuum removing the air (and oxygen), I would think it'd absolutely slow the polymerization process if not stop it all together.

Over the long term, it'll be interesting to see how the stopper itself lasts. Does it gum up and crystalize, making it more difficult to seal or to remove? Or, as a consequence of a vacuum, does that not happen?

Really good of you to try this out. Hope it works and proves a lasting solution.

  2. Thanks for sharing the idea! The rubber stoppers were a good idea but this is even better. I think the rubber on this vacuum seal looks pretty good. It expands with pressure so I think it should work even if there is a build of of medium residue. Very cool!

  3. So what's the verdict, Brad? Did this method of using wine vaccuum sealing pumps help keep the Galkyd from drying out over time?

    1. The vacuum seals worked great! Additionally I now use the Vacu Vin coffee and nuts vacuum seal containers to store my bags of paint (that I store in sacks of seran wrap sealed with rubber bands). It is an additional way to keep the paint usable indefinitely. You had a brilliant idea! Thanks for passing it along.

  4. Got a new toy (a food saver vacuum unit) and been looking to use it any chance i get, that will wear out soon enough im sure. I store most of my ammo in ammo tins and all is inside my house and AC is on so i dont really have to worry about humity. But started thinking about hurricane season is here or a broken water pipe or something like that and was wondering if it would be worth it to seal it up. Ive bought some ammo bulk over the past 2 years and know i wont shoot it all up anytime soon.
So it came to mind maybe using my new toy to seal up some ammo, has anyone ever used one of these for this purpose?
Does anyone have a reason why i shouldn’t do it, something i haven’t thought of??

  5. Okay, you've convinced me to get a Best Vacuum Sealer All I needed was the little push - been wanting one for a couple years and now I can justify it. And for the little plastic containers that can't be recycled. Drill some holes in the bottom for drainage and use them for seedling transplants for the garden.
I don't have a FoodSaver, but it looks like I should get one!

  7. The other thing is to spread the packets out in your freezer, so they each freeze quickly. A bundle of unfrozen stuff will take longer to freeze, than several small packets spread out.Best Vacuum Sealer

  17. Plastic water bottles have served us well, yet presently there's no reason to try not to get a vacuum protected water bottle. They're predominant inside and out, keeping your favored beverage warm or cold for a few hours. What's more, they're eco-accommodating, holding you back from purchasing plastic water bottles. A protected water bottle makes a support between the fluids in the compartment and the outside temperature. Since most protected containers utilize a twofold divider, it likewise implies that there will be no buildup on the outside of the fluid transporter.
