I have actually gotten some really great color and texture this way.Brad Tearehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04311014022243382658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5200138797648475238.post-26176886120200267662013-03-14T09:38:54.863-06:002013-03-14T09:38:54.863-06:00Eric, I have used Open Acrylics and I like them bu...Eric, I have used Open Acrylics and I like them but they are a bit thin for my thicker painting style. I want to try them with some chalk added in the field to see if the chalk thickens the mixture without speeding the drying time.

KBW, Thick texture is a problem with acrylics because you can't scape the dried surface to "oil up" and paint over the previous dry layer. I find I have to get it right the first time or at best use very little retouching.Brad Tearehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04311014022243382658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5200138797648475238.post-56311759638402492522012-10-08T16:33:58.989-06:002012-10-08T16:33:58.989-06:00Brad, I've been painting for about 6 months. ...Brad, I've been painting for about 6 months. I tried your thick paint technique using acrylic by mixing some molding paste with a little retarder and then mixing the paint. This worked well but my technique was not too good because I wasn't using strokes of color but rather dabs of color. I now see what I need to do. First is to layout a design of lights and darks and then start adding the color. I'm wondering if I should discard my painting since it has a very rough texture or is there a way to add thick paint over the old and dry paint?KBWhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15398639634701455004noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5200138797648475238.post-39240577934211368342012-03-31T13:55:10.318-06:002012-03-31T13:55:10.318-06:00Thanks Brad, that put a big smile on my face :)

Haven't tried it myself though.Erik van Elvenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17498429655645266432noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5200138797648475238.post-2421915266609232692012-03-29T08:51:38.743-06:002012-03-29T08:51:38.743-06:00Thanks AP. If I focus too much on doing a masterpiece I find I don't get out in the field. I'm glad you found the video helpful. I think if might be a popular one.Brad Tearehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04311014022243382658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5200138797648475238.post-53324048005646266292012-03-28T21:01:13.554-06:002012-03-28T21:01:13.554-06:00Rob, would I be wrong to assume the lost painting ...Rob, would I be wrong to assume the lost painting assumed mythical status?Brad Tearehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04311014022243382658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5200138797648475238.post-38940835968894944602012-03-28T19:50:39.905-06:002012-03-28T19:50:39.905-06:00Funny, I did the same thing once, never found the ...Funny, I did the same thing once, never found the painting though.Rob Colvinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11863077384511645522noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5200138797648475238.post-57426541908470760812012-03-28T19:09:40.483-06:002012-03-28T19:09:40.483-06:00I won't address the issue of it being the best...I won't address the issue of it being the best plein air painting you've ever done, but I'm pretty sure it was one of the very best videos you've ever made.
